Volunteers Needed for 2009/2010 Season

A great deal of work needs to take place in order for the Association to build upon our past success.  For this work to be completed efficiently and effectively, many additional volunteers are needed.  People with a heart for service, and who want to be a part of something that is important to their child, can find many ways to help within the Association.  Whether you have the time or interest in taking on a task that is short-term, one that might be a medium size project, or one that covers the length of the season, we would really appreciate your assistance.  For instance, the following is a list of coordinator roles that need filled:

Ø       Communications Coordinator – Helps to ensure that the membership is made aware of Association events and news, and helps to publicize team and player accomplishments to the community.  This person will work closely with the web master to ensure that this most important communication tool is up-to-date and will also work with the Yearbook/Association Program manager.

Ø       Concessions Coordinator – Leads game day concessions operations.  Sue Succop and the various team managers did a great job last year of setting up a system by which the operations ran very smoothly and did not place a large burden on any one person.

Ø       Registrar – Leads the registration process.

Ø       Equipment & Facilities Coordinator – Leads a team of people who ensure that fields are game ready through the fall and spring season, as well as ensure that coaches first aid kits are stocked. Additionally, they have responsibility for helmets at the high school level.

Ø       Travel Coordinator – Plans and manages the logistics of overnight travel for tournaments and varsity games.

Ø       Middle School Coordinator – Schedules games, communicates information specific to the teams at this level and with opposing programs, enlists the support of families within the group to support game day and other operations.

Ø       Youth Coordinator – (5th & 6th Grades) Same as MS Coordinator.

Ø       K-3 Coordinator – Same as MS & Youth Coordinator

Ø       High School Coordinator – Communicates information specific to the teams at this level and enlists the support of families within the group to support game day operations and other events.  Additionally, works with the administrators at the high school and intermediate high school for away game requirements, such as early dismissal and day storage of equipment bags.

Ø       Fundraising Coordinator - Leads the Association’s efforts to raise additional funds in order to help keep registration fees as low as possible.  For example, in the past few years the Association has had raffle ticket sales and a “Night at the Races” event.

Ø       Apparel Sales Coordinator – Organize the set of clothing and accessories that the Association offers, solicits orders and works with the vendors for fulfillment of products to our members/customers.

As you can see, there are lots of positions to fill.  In addition, each one of these areas has the need for many people to support them in meeting the roles’ responsibilities.  Please take a moment to consider which of these roles you are willing to take on or support and let me know at your first opportunity.

Parking Info for V/JV Games at Graham Park on May 4th

For the V/JV games next Monday evening at Graham Park vs. Peters Township letting, everyone must park in the parking lots and not along side the road across from the practice field.  Given the relatively high profile nature of the game Monday, expect to see a police presence at the request of the Township's Parks & Recreation Department.  They supposedly have been told to issue tickets.

V/JV Trip Info to Western Reserve Academy

The JV and Varsity teams will be traveling to Western Reserve Academy in Cleveland, OH this Friday.  The boys will be dismissed at 12:45 and the bus is scheduled to leave at 1:00.  Game time is 4:30.  The bus will return to the High School that evening.

  • Coach Hoffman would like the boys to wear polos and khakis (pants or shorts) to school and on the bus.

  • Have all of your uniforms and equipment packed and brought to school that morning.

  • Make sure you have a drink for the game and something light to eat.

  • It would be a good idea to pack extra dry clothes, socks, shoes for the ride home in the event that it rains.  It is not in the forecast now, but better to be comfortable.  There will be a locker room available for before and after the game.

  • The bus will stop for something to eat on the way home, so you will need money for dinner.

SHS players…for your bags, same instructions as last time – unfortunately we do not have reserved space for bags in the school, so if you don’t have a vehicle to store your bags in, please ask another player for help.

IHS players…Mr. Cumo has been notified that you will be bringing your equipment to school - the storage room that was used before will be available for you.

Please watch your email for any last minute changes.

Matt Striebel to Visit SV lacrosse

Photos from Matt Striebel Visit

From Jeff Fyock:  I'm very pleased to announce that we are expecting to have a special guest join us next Tuesday, April 21st at Graham Park.

Matt Striebel, of Trilogy Lacrosse is going to be in the Pittsburgh area and has agreed to visit with us. Matt is in the most elite class of lacrosse players in the world and is arguably the best midfielder in the game. He has a cannon of a shot on the run or with time and room. He is nearly impossible to guard one on one. A true playmaker, Matt's tremendous vision allows him to feed as effectively as he can score. Some of his career highlights include:

  • MLL Championship Philadelphia Barrage 2004, 2006 & 2007

  • Silver Medalist Team USA 2006

  • Gold Medalist Team USA 2002

  • All American Princeton University 2004

  • NCAA Champion Princeton University 2001

  • 3X All Ivy League

  • Matt has played both Middie and Attack at the D-I level.

I've met Matt a few times.  He is a terrific speaker and lives up to his billing as having amazing skills. It will be a great opportunity to see and hear from one of the greatest lacrosse players in the world.  Access to Graham Park's facilities have enabled us to take advantage of holding this event in the North Hills.

Two of our Youth teams will be hosting Hampton that evening, and we have agreed to extend an invitation to some of the surrounding programs stop by as well.  So it may be a full house.

The expectation is that Matt will arrive around 6:00 PM and spend the evening with us.  We can expect him to speak with the boys about what it takes to get to the top in a sport and to put on some shooting demonstrations.

JV/FR Schedule Information

As you may be aware, the 2009 game schedules have been difficult to follow this year.  There has also been more last minute information and changes than in prior years.  I would ask your indulgence as we put the final touches on what will be our largest SV lacrosse schedule ever.  This year has been very challenging for those of us putting the season together.  Since this is the first year that Boys Lacrosse is governed by the PIAA/ WPIAL, we have had to follow many different guidelines in terms of scheduling.  Simply put, there is now a completely different dynamic in putting together a  game schedule. When and with whom we schedule, changes from school to school.  Only a small fraction of our games are scheduled by the WPIAL.   Athletic Directors in many schools are completely in control of schedules, while  other programs, rely primarily on parents and coaches for schedules decisions.  There has also been disputes about things  such as the length of  games.  Some differences are still being worked out among schools, as well as with the referee association.  These uncertainties have contributed  to our inability to finalize game schedules  promptly.  Even now we are hearing that some start times may change.    Of course, all bus, ref and EMT schedules  depend on a fixed and agreed upon start time, so all delays have had a ripple effect. Without getting into the regional politics of the situation, let's just say things could have gone a little easier.

So, with that said, the schedules are nearly complete and posted on the web site.  www.svlacrosse.org .   Please follow the schedule, but pay close attention, as some start times may change by as much as a half hour.   We will do our best to keep the web site up to date as well as announce via email, coaches and team parents any last minute changes.  Please stay informed.  Junior Varsity level players will find that they are playing a 9th grade schedule as well as some of the JV Blue(B) games, OR they are playing the JV Black(A) schedule as well as some additional games on the (B) schedule.  On occasion, some individual players, as the WPIAL rules allow, may be ask to attend additional games by JV coach.  Any questions regarding  team or schedule selection should always be directed to Head JV  Coach Thom Smith or Head Coach Peter Hoffman.

Thank you for your patience.
