Last year, the Pumpkin Classic had 16 of the areas top teams competing.  We expect at least this many again this year, and there may also be teams coming in from outside the area to turn up the competition even higher.

Please mark the date, plan to attend, and better yet, plan to help out.  There are many ways to do so…some requiring little effort and time…others being a bit more involved.  Phil Culichia is coordinating the tournament for us, and would certainly appreciate the help.  You can contact Phil at pculichia@gmail.com to volunteer your assistance.

On Sunday, October 12th, 2008 the Seneca Valley Lacrosse Association hosted the 6th Annual Pumpkin Classic. The one-day competition solidified western Pennsylvania as a growing, competitive region for lacrosse.  With sixteen (16) registered teams, over 330 athletes laced up their cleats, donned their helmets, grabbed their crosses and took the fields of battle. Thirty-three (33) hard fought battles were decided on four fields in the course of nine (9) hours.  There were two (2) brave-heart face-offs that determined tie-breakers, one determined a championship competitor.

At five o’clock, in the fading sunlight of Indian summer, the two championship competitors entered the stadium to compete for the 6th Annual Pumpkin Classic title.  In a forceful battle, with every shot contested, Team Xtreme defeated the team from Allegheny North with a final score of 7 to 5.  Congratulations to Team Xtreme for going undefeated in the 2008 6th Annual Pumpkin classic and taking the trophy back to the south hills.

Finally, the days Most Valuable Player went to Sam Crum, Junior Attack. Sam was chosen by each opposing coach for his valuable contribution in each battle of the day, out-gaining all other vote-getters.

The Seneca Valley Lacrosse Association would like to send a special thank you to the event sponsors: Pro Knitwear, Queen City Lacrosse, Pittsburgh Lacrosse Store and of course to our numerous, hard-working volunteers, who made the 2008 6th Annual Pumpkin Classic the best ever.

2007 Pumpkin Classic In Review

Congratulations to...
Seneca Valley High School Raiders
on their victory in the 2007 Pumpkin Classic Tournament.

(Defeating Peters Township 10-2 in the championship and going undefeated in the tournament)

On Sunday, October 14th the Seneca Valley Lacrosse Association hosted the 5th Annual Pumpkin Classic Lacrosse tournament on the Seneca Valley Campus.  The one-day competition began at 9:00AM.  Twelve (12) teams competed this year, truly a reflection of the growing popularity of a great sport.  Those 12 teams, represented by roughly 275 athletes, fought thirty-one (31) battles in the course of nine (9) hours.  There were three (3) over-time Braveheart situations and a three-way tie for first place in the first bracket, settled by the # of goals allowed, which was a difference of one (1)…the lesson that can be illustrated from these figures…every play counts…from the first face-off to the last shot in a Braveheart…the passes, the ground balls, the defensive slides!”

At five o’clock with an autumn sunset lighting the sky, the two remaining teams entered the stadium for the final challenge, which Seneca Valley won 10 – 0 over Peters regaining title to the Pumpkin Classic Championship. Additionally, the coaches selected the day’s most valuable player, Brian Meenan of Bethel Park.
